Brighton Vegfest 2016

Intro

empty vegfest

Our weekend actually started on the Friday before the Brighton Vegfest. Thankfully we had a friend give us a lift down, so getting to the venue was quite straightforward. We were one of the earlier stallholders to set up, it is always so different without the stalls and crowds in a venue.

Vegan Bodybuilding stall

With the stall all set up we were all ready for an exciting weekend.

Bumping into friends

After setting up we took the time to wander the venue seeing where our friends had stalls.

Veganicity

Our first discovery was the guys from Veganicity. They have been stars this year, helping us with travel costs, so we can get to events around the UK. They are also sponsors of our contests as well, so support them if you can. (use code VEGANBODY2016 for 35% off all their supplements).

Freet
Next up we found the Freet people.  I found Freet last year at a vegan event in Leeds we were doing. I really loved both their minimal footwear and their mudgrip trainers.  I actually had them bring along a pair of the trainers so I could pick them up. Their range is all vegan and they have given us a 55% discount, so use the code PeteR when ordering & save some cash.

Jeavons

Good heavens it's Jeavons is the new kid in the vegan sweetie market. They are both long-time vegans and animal rights activists. You may recognise Corin as the guy sucking the cows teat in the successful Viva! milk campaign from a few years ago.
If you enjoyed sweets like toffos or similar soft, chocolate covered sweeties, then your problems are solved by these guys!

The weekend

cakes
I must admit I do not always eat ideally during these events. I do enjoy trying out new foods and experiencing novel things so I give myself some leeway during events to try out a few things I do not normally eat.
more sweet goodies
I also try to get along and try out new things that are on show. In this vein I tested out a massage belt-type thing at the vegfest.
massage belt
Some of you may know that I spent a few years training as a massage therapist, so I always have an interest in massage-related produucts.  I actually bought one of these at the event as I was quite impressed with how it felt.  I will probably write a review in the blog assuming it is durable and continues to work well as it is an interesting bit of kit.
During the weekend we were next to the awesome vegan runners
vegan runners

They had a super-busy weekend as they not only had a stall to run, but also the Brighton Half Marathon to run on the Sunday morning

Brighton half marathon medal winners

We looked after their stall during the morning and they arrived later with a load of medals, so props to them for spreading the vegan message to everyone taking part in the event.

Sunday was our busiest day with the arrival of Bikini pro Stephanie Jane Rowden for a talk.  For those that do not know the 'bikini class' is a somewhat 'softer' look than figure or physique, more like a fitness model look, they train just as hard as any other class of athlete, but their goals mean they aim for a slightly different look, out of all the classes it is probably the most healthy for the female athlete (in my view).
We have uploaded edited highlights of the talk at https://youtu.be/65yKcQyjmKE, so check it out if you missed that.

Steph
If you think that sounds interesting (or you just want to tone-up or trim down) pop over to fitt sisters and check them out.

Pull-up challenge

stall

The pull-up challenge is a bit of fun we have at the Brighton Vegfest every year.  It isn't too hard we give a little prize if you can do enough pull-ups (or chin-ups).  Males need to do 7 reps and females need to do 3 reps. I need to thank the folks over at the Animal Protection Agency, they bought us a few sweeties to bag up and give away at the event, so support them if you can as they do amazing work confronting the horrors of the exotic animal trade.
We had many successful people.  Hopefully I get your name and the amount you achieved correct, but with a list this long, mistakes may made (I apologise in advance for any errors).

Inverted row contest

It was the last hour of Sunday so we knew it was time for the main event of the vegfest, the Inverted row contest.  There had been several challengers to Matt, last years male winner and Caterina was back to defend her title so excitement was high as we entered the event.
We started with a short tribute to Robbie Hazeley who sadly passed in early February.  He was there at the start of all this.  He gave us the inspiration to grow and continues, in spirit, to help us grow and reach greater heights.
After the short tribute the main event began but before we get onto that, please spare a moment to check out our sponsors.  These are the people that make sure that the events are filled with prizes.  When we have a contest the winners get a major prize, but everyone who takes part also gets something, just for entering.  So, if you need anything they offer check them out, we have managed to start getting some discounts for you to use on some of these brands, so you can save a little money as well.

Sponsors

As usual we would be grateful if you could pop over and support the sponsors if they have anything you are interested in buying? This not only helps the companies, but keeps them supporting us, so the contests can grow and become even more popular.

Wrap up

That was it for our weekend after the event we made sure everyone got a prize or 2 who entered, then packed up our stuff.  It certainly was a busy day.  We enjoyed sharing our corner with Vegan Runners and hopefully we can do more stuff together as our goals run parallel to each other.
It was a little sad to go, but at least it was an amazing view on the way home.

Bandstand
As usual we shall end the write-up with a review of our sponsors and pictures of the participants getting prizes.  Support the companies if you can and remember everyone who enters our contests get a prize, so why not think about joining us at the Bristol Vegfest on May 21-22nd, we will be doing a seated shoulder press contest (7Kg females, 15Kg males)...get practising!
