James in command of the VBB stall

This was the first year of the the London Vegfest.  It was at the massive venue of the Olympia in London & we arrived on the day wondering just how well the weekend long event would go?
We set up next to the awesome Vegan health and fitness magazine crew.  They had flown all the way across the pond to announce the launch of their magazine in British shops later this year, so if you want to be kept informed about that, then you should email them & they will let know the exact arrival time of the magazine on UK soil!

Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine

The best magazine in stores right now!

Over from the US we had Brenda Carey & Brian Acree to announce that the magazine is going mainstream in the UK being sold in WH Smiths & other large outlets from winter of this year.

Patrik Baboumian

Patrik helps Xenia reach new heights in strength!

Germany's Strongest Man 2011, World Record Holder at several lifts & vegan athlete Patrik Baboumian is probably the strongest vegan alive.  He is also the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet.  He even lent me his computer for my talk & he didn't even know me!  An awesome guy who is as nice as he is strong!

The London Vegfest Shoulder press championships

As this was the first year of a new show we thought it needed a bit of a warm welcome & so we decided that a maximum repetition shoulder press might be a great way to give the first year something special! So we had the women lifting a 7Kg dumbbell, while the guys lifted a 15Kg dumbbell.  Just to see who was the best overhead presser on the day!

Women's Contest

We got quite a bit of interest in the females event this year.  We were also on the main stage for the event so it was to a packed house that the women hit the stage

Before we begin I am hoping I get the names & faces right, any errors let me know & I'll correct as soon as possible.  Now on with the contest:

Elaine blasted off the event with a fabulous 24 reps

Emily did a massive 20 reps

Anastasia pumped out a mind blowing 26 reps

Hortencia managed an awesome 18 reps

Jessica managed a decent 14 reps

Xenia crushed 20 reps

Ludmila pushed out 22 reps

Alice got an astonishing 28 reps

Men's Contest

Next up came the men.  Again, if the order is wrong you can blame Maz & we can change it.

First up came AJ with a powerful 12 reps

Next up came big Jamie with a massive 34 reps

Aniel got a creditable 15 reps

Barry hammered out a tough 20 reps

Andres squeezed out a commendable 5 reps

Alexandra cranked out 21 reps

Arthur ripped out 35 reps

Javier got a well earned 16 reps

Ben got an incredible 31 reps

Richard got a handy 13 reps

Munish finished the event with 15 reps

Patrik shows some Vegan Power

Just about everyone thought the excitement was over, but one of our guests was the massive Patrik Baboumian.  He was happy to come up & give us a short chat about how & why he became vegan.

Then, to the delight of the crowd, he gave a demonstration of strength by easily hoisting the weight & ripping out 70 reps...we had to stop at 70 reps because the discs had come lose, but he looked good for hitting at least 100 reps!

He then strolled over to the microphone & ended with a massive yell of "VEGAN POWER!"...by now the crowd were in a frenzy!

Winners

In second place was Anastasia with 26 reps & the winner was Alice with 28 reps

For the guys - in second place was Jamie with 34 reps & the winner was arm wrestling sensation Arthur Dorohov who got a fantastic 35 reps

Wrap up

That was it for the contest at the London Vegfest, but the day was far from over as there were still talks to had from Patrik & from me later that day.  So, if you were interested in strength you had more than your moneys worth. For those into other sports there was footballer (soccer player to those across the pond) Neil Robinson who was a top player back in the day & the first person to go vegan in the sport of football that I have heard of (also a nice bloke, so check out his website here).  There was also Scott Jurek the ultra- distance runner who I missed totally, which is a shame.

So, in one venue you had an International level Strongman, an International level arm wrestler, an International level ultra-endurance athlete, a first division (which would be premier division these days) footballer, an International level bodybuilder & personal trainer, as well as loads of less known & up & coming athletes all interested in maximum performance while eating a vegan diet.  So, who says you cannot compete & win on a vegan diet!

The London Vegfest was an awesome success in my view.  The punters were happy & the stall holders had all sold out by end, so the weekend was a great success for everyone who went along.  I would like to thank Tim, who organised the weekend for keeping the event vegan & for getting so many new faces to the event.  It was a total success from my point of view!  A big thank you to everyone involved!!!!

To end I'll just drop the list of sponsors again & add in a few pictures of people collecting their prizes after the Shoulder Press contest
