Maz & Pat discuss training & diet at the stall

As usual for us it was an mega-early start to get to the wilds of the Midlands. So, at the wonderful time of 4AM we began our journey to the wonders of Wolverhampton.  Maz has a load of mates as it used to be a his old stomping ground, so he was very excited to be revisiting & meeting up with mates he hadn't seen in a long time.

Talks

The first talk was to be done by me.  Unfortunately, the time was changed to 11AM, but no one put it up on the website, so people turned up to to see my talk at 3PM (& got someone talking about coconuts - sorry about that!). The other issue was the presentation was supposed to be a powerpoint one, but when I arrived we didn't have a projector so in the end we had to scrap the original talk & just do a more general training one where we asked people their goals, main obstacles & then went on to try & improve their chances of achieving them.  I think it well especially as we also had Pat Reeves World Record holding powerlifter there to also add in some advice for everyone on how to get exactly what they wanted to achieve in their training & diet. We actually ran out of time & got booted out (in a nice way) by the next speakers.

After my talk Pat had to rush off as she had her own talk to do, so she had a VERY busy first few hours at the event!

At the stall with vegan fitness

Many of you probably now this, but Vegan Fitness is the baby of Vegan Bodybuilding.  It launched using members of the old vegan bodybuilding email list we ran back before the whole messageboard thing started, so we are certainly very close to everyone over at that site.

Rowing contest

The Vegan Fitness crew ran a contest with a rowing machine.  The fastest 500m winning...they had one slight problem though!

Look NO PRIZES! We couldn't have that now could we!!!

Being part of our extended family we couldn't have a Vegan Fitness contest having no prizes.  As we do pretty well in terms of getting sponsors we donated a few of our prizes to them so they had something to give the winners.

Not a massive prize selection, but better than nothing for the rowing contest

So, we donated some sweets for the younger entrants & a few other goodies from Bodycheck, Veganicity, Koko & Vegan Health & fitness Magazine so they had a few gifts to get their contest going.

At least now the entrants were rowing for something!  Plus we still had easily enough prizes for our contest as our sponsors are all pretty generous (thank you sponsors!).  See lower down for ways you can support the sponsors of our events!

Push-up contest

It is becoming a something of a tradition at the Wolves event that we have the push-up event as we approach the end of the festival.  This year we were lucky enough to have to have Pat Reeves who not is not only a World Record holding athlete, but also an Internationally sanctioned Judge at powerlifting events so she's trained to see that everyone did it to her exacting standards!

Sponsors

Before we go onto the event itself I would like to say a little bit about our sponsors.  Without their constant support we would be running a contest with no prizes, so I would just like to thank them all for being involved & supporting us & letting us give away their stuff to everyone entering the contest.

Women's contest

We decided it was time to really see how much "Vegan Power" the ladies of the West Midlands had by having them only do full reps, we decided it was time to drop the whole 'on your knees' push-up as we knew vegan women where strong enough to do full reps if they had to...& we were right!

Ursula managed a decent 3 reps

Carri managed 1 rep (sorry I was a bit slow taking the picture on this one)

Laura managed a crazy 36 reps

That was the end of the ladies.  It was tough, but everyone thought that full push-ups might be the way to go from now on at these events.

Men's contest

The men's contest has been very exciting in previous years with results as close as one rep separating the first & second place.  So, with rising excitement the men took the stage.

First off was 10yrs Caden who stunned the crowd with an awesome 22 reps!

Next up we had Luke with an excellent 36 reps

Last years runner-up John did an awesome 54 reps

Matt did a credible 18 reps

Dan got a decent 39 reps

Lastly came a new comer Safin who got an outstanding 57 reps

Winners

For the ladies Laura got a truly amazing 36 reps showing that ladies can develop true Vegan Power with just a little time training in the gym

For the guys the big man Safin shows what even larger guys can do with body weight exercises if they are willing to work at them. He got a 57 reps.

Wrap-up

So our day was done & it was time to pack up & head for home.  Oddly enough we met a women on the train, gave her some of our vegan food, a copy of Maz's cookbook  - the Chip Butty Vegan - & by the time we got the Euston she was already considering giving the vegan lifestyle a go!  So, we can thank some of the caterers at the festival for helping convince her it was a good thing to try out!

That was the end of our day, as usual we will leave you with the list of our sponsors & photos of competitors getting some prizes.  So, support the sponsors if they offer stuff you might want to buy as they are the ones giving us all those stunning prizes!
