Maz & Gary hold down the fort at the VBB stall - with matching shirts!

The Animal Aid show is always one of the best shows of the year simply because you get to meet up with so many old faces & Xmas is approaching, so everyone is just starting to get a little bit more festive.   So we were all excited to be coming along to this years event.  Unlike the events further north we also get a reasonable start in the morning, so it was great to get to the event with no rail, road or other issues!

Bodycheck Vulcan gripper challenge

This is a mk 1 Vulcan gripper, it can be adjusted from fairly hard to ultra-tough.

As you know one of my pet peeves recently has been the generally weak showing of vegans in grip sports.  We've only really had Martin Whittred who may be the only vegan to officially close the CoC #3 gripper as far as I know?

So, to try & drum up a little more enthusiasm for gripping I thought I'd bring it along & give people the chance to win a Bodycheck sample pack.

Bodycheck is a great pre-workout you should try

We set the women at the lowest possible setting & the guys had to close it at setting 1.  This was what you'd consider baseline strength for a fit active person in my view, but many people just ignore the grip (& the wrist) to focus on the showy muscles like biceps.  Their is a well known saying "You are only as strong as your weakest link".  As the hands & wrists are involved in virtually all lifting activities, then getting strong in those areas only makes sense.

The first to close the gripper was Coach Gary.  Normally we wouldn't include someone doing the stall, but Gary, a training expert, admitted that he never trained grip directly! Something we need to highlight is the need to hit these smaller areas now & again if we are ever going to achieve maximum strength levels.

Coach Gary shows you how to easily you can close a gripper if you try

The next guy to close the Vulcan gripper was Chris

Next up Wedjy got in on the action & crushed it

Doug was up next

Wayne was next to crush the Vulcan

Callum was also a victor in the struggle with the Vulcan

There was also Steve who I failed to photograph, sorry.

This was nowhere near all the people who tried, at most maybe 10% of males who tried closed it.  Bear in mind that this is on setting 1 the first increase above the lowest setting on the device.  Yes, it is designed for strong people, but it does show a real need for us to start building up some grip strength amongst us vegans!

You may also notice one other interesting fact.  0% of women could even close the opening level on the gripper.  Not one woman could close this gripper at even the lowest position.  I think that is fairly worrying as women do have generally lower grip strength than males, but do you really want to be hanging off a cliff with a grip that isn't strong enough to keep you from falling?

We did end up giving away samples for just attempting to close the gripper as we would have had to take some home if we didn't!  The weird thing is the women were happier to give the gripper a go than the guys, we actually had a larger % of women than men try to squeeze the Vulcan.  So, come on guys & gals let's make 2014 the year we all improve our grip & next time the Vulcan comes out to play we'll have to raise the spring pressure because too many people are winning :-)

Push-up contest

Coach Gary demonstrates push-ups & the form he wants

As usual the highlight of the whole fayre is the push-up contest.  We had long time champion Dave Arnold & the young stud Matt Woodman chasing the push-up crown, so we knew we were in for a decent battle with the men, but for the ladies it was up in the air as we had no idea who was capable of what, but with runners, weight trainers & even rugby players, the ladies event looked to be ever bit as exciting as the men's contest!

Sponsors

I know this part can be a little bit boring, but honestly it is these good folks who keep the event going.  As Xmas is coming & a new year of fitness beckons, if you, or someone you know, could use any of these products, then do pass on these companies as they sell decent quality products that work.  They are companies that we use ourselves & have a decent service, so support them if you can.

Women's contest

This years event looked to be an awesome spectacle & the crowd was getting quite boisterous as the ladies prepared to hit the stage.  This year we decided that women doing reps on the knees was no longer acceptable, so it was full reps for the women & they showed that they didn't need to be babied by doing partials.

Martina Got things going with a decent 13 reps

Katie got 1 rep

Katie also had a moment to hit a pose afterwards!

Bethany then hit an astronomical 16 reps

Finally Georgie stepped up & got a mind blowing 27 reps

Men's contest

Next up the men took to the stage.  This year Coach Gary had devised yet another evil twist to the usual event.  He decided to include a pause at both the top & bottom of the rep.  This made each rep much harder than they normally would be.  It also eliminated the opportunity to cut the reps short as people got tired.  So, although you'll see lower reps this year than in previous years, the event was actually harder!

Adrian got things going with a solid 22 reps

Next up was Jon with a decent 11 reps

Lucas managed an acceptable 20 reps

Callum then pushed out an amazing 40 reps

Next up came Matt with a superb 43 reps

Javier came next with an impressive 23 reps

Chris entered the contest with a heart warming 20 reps

Darren stepped up & got an worked for 40 reps

Next up came the champ for many years Dave with 52 reps

The Steve did a very barbaric 39 reps

the final guy was Mark who got a commendable 18 reps

Winners

For the women in second place we had Bethany with 16 reps

She had to go back to her work at the fayre,
so we had to sent Coach Gary to track her down

In first place Georgie got a very impressive 27 reps

In second place for the guys was Matt with a very tough 43 reps

In first place for the men came the all-conquering Dave.  Will this guy ever get beaten?

Outside of contest Dave & Matt are actually very good friends

It looks like Matt can't wait to get some of those bodycheck pre-workout supplements ;-)

Wrap-up

That about wraps-up our last event of the year.  We had a blast getting out the old gripper & then ending the day with the push-up event.  Hopefully everyone who turned up enjoyed themselves as much as we did.  Don't forget we will be doing loads of events next year so if you can come along & say "Hi" or even enter one of our contests.

As usual I'll end with a repeat of our sponsors & a look at a few of our competitors getting their prizes
